Two cousins of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience Egbeni and Kate Eni, abducted on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 are still in the hands of their captors some nine days after their abduction by gunmen dressed in military uniforms.
It was learnt that the gunmen, after about five days, established contact with their families and demanded a ransom of 50 million NGN (Nigerian naira), that is over two-hundred and fifty thousand US dollars to set them free.
The ex-President’s cousins were kidnapped at their stores along the riverbank of Akempli, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State at about 8.30 am on the said day.
The kidnappers forced their victims into a waiting speedboat and took them to an unknown destination.
Police Public Relations Officer, Butswat Asinim, said the victims had not yet been released.
Mr. Asinim, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said he was not aware of any ransom demand, adding that security agencies were still making efforts to get them freed.
However the Punch reports that an unnnamed youth leader in Ogbia said it took the hoodlums more than four days to establish contact with the victims families.
“They called and demanded 50 million NGN ransom. The families are still negotiating with the kidnappers,” he said.
