Rejected by 10 hospitals- 450kg JHB man will finally be treated

60-year-old South African, Corrie La Granj suffers from a medical condition called ascites, which causes fluid to build up around his vital organs, leading to immense weight gain.

After being turned away from more than 10 hospitals. The reason being that many of the facilities he had previously visited said they simply could not accommodate a person his size.
The Health Department today, Wednesday confirmed he would receive treatment and would be seen by a doctor.

Corrie La Granj arrived at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, where hoped to receive medical treatment.

“Just trying to get this organised has been crazy. Nobody seems to want to touch it, nobody wants to do a sonar on my body or take a pre special sonar machine.” Corrie said.

Paramedics and neighbours lifted him from his bed using bed sheets and ropes and then moved him into a vehicle earlier during the day. His bed was transported in another vehicle with a trailer – his family brought the bed to the hospital so they could not be turned away.

His wife, Shammy, said, “I would just like a doctor to help us drain the fluid and to help him survive. He’s going to die if nobody helps him.”

He has been dearly supported by his relatives.
