ex-SAFA Referee, Clifford Malgas, gets 4 years in prison sentence

Former SAFA Referee, Clifford Malgas, was sentenced to four years behind bars after he was convicted on two counts of corruption and perjury related to his role in attempted match fixing during the 2011 SAFA Second Division play-offs in Cape Town.

The Belville Commercial Crimes Court on Friday sentenced Malgas to two years for corruption and two more years for perjury and none of the sentences were suspended, meaning he serve four yours behind bars.

The former SAFA referee had been convicted following overwhelming evidence that he conspired with convicted criminal, Philemon Setshedi, who had already been convicted ans sentenced in 2003.

Meanhwile, SAFA president Danny Jordaan believes this sentence will send out a strong message.

"We welcome this custodial sentence as it sends a strong message to criminals that they do not have a place in our sport. SAFA has adopted a zero-tolerance to any form of crime and anyone harboring such evil tendencies be warned," said Jordaan in a statement released by SAFA.

The Association, SAPS and NPA will leave no stone unturned to ensure that all corrupt elements within football are brought to book.
