Another case of bullying at KZN school

A full investigation of an incident of bullying at an Umlazi school is underway after video footage emerged showing pupils slapping a girl.

KwaZulu-Natal Education officials are looking at the footage, which appears to have been taken by another child. It was filmed in a hostel at the Vukuzakhe High school.

The victim is seen sitting on a bed while the aggressor smacks her in the face, repeatedly asking her questions about another girl, while others look on.

Vukuzakhe is a public high school which offers boarding facilities for long-distance pupils.

The bullying video is not the first incident of violence the school has faced.

KwaZulu-Natal Education Department spokesperson Muzi Mhlambi confirmed that in September pupils were charged with attacking teachers.

The children were reacting to allegations of corruption and fraud levelled against the principal.

The matter was being dealt with by the provincial department.

Mhlambi said the department does not take bullying lightly.

“We sent officials to the school yesterday for a tribunal, which recommended that the children be expelled from the school,” he said.

The girls are currently suspended from the school.

Earlier this month, footage emerged of another incident of boarding school bullying, in which a black pupil was humiliated and raped by a group of white boys at a school in Jan Kempdorp in the Northern Cape.
