How Police officer was shot dead by Coporal in Bauchi

Superintendent Chris Eza's life was rudely cut short, no thanks to his untimely death on February 25, 2015. Vanguard Metro gathered that on that fateful day of the incident, SP Eza had gone out to get food at an eatery along Ahmadu Bello Way around 9pm when he saw some police men on patrol. On observation, he found out that one of them was not properly dressed and immediately reprimanded him. The cop, a corporal, did not take kindly to this and grumbled in protest.

An angry Chris felt the corporal’s action was unacceptable and warned the fellow that he was going to disarm him if he didn’t take care. Instead of apologising, the corporal cocked his gun and threatened to shoot the superintendent.

Calling his bluff, Eza moved towards the junior cop who immediately opened fire, killing the superintendent in the process.

A close colleague to the slain officer, Ayodele Agbebi, said that it was wrong for SP Chris to threaten to disarm the police corporal while on duty. According to Ayodele:

“I feel that SP Chris Eza overstepped his bounds and acted inappropriately towards the police      corporal. What I expected from him was to lay whatever complaints he had against the corporal with the Police authorities instead of trying to disarm him.

“Chris Eza was highly connected to big personalities. He was once an ADC to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, so he had rapid promotions. Success in this way can be very intoxicating.
“So, it’s quite sad that he ended that way, but this serves as a lesson to all to always be humble and respect people irrespective of who they are”.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Haruna Mohammed, disclosed that Eza was on routine visit to a checkpoint on Ahmadu Bello Way, Bauchi when the incident happened. Mohammed said that Eza was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, ATBUTH, Bauchi where he was certified dead by a medical doctor.

Eza had been described as a gallant and easy going officer. His corpse has since been deposited at the teaching hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, the suspect has been arrested and detained, while Mohammed has ordered full scale investigation into the matter.
