Newborn rescued from pit toilet- What a world!

A newborn baby girl is recovering in a place of safety after she was rescued from a pit latrine in Mpumalanga, Eastern South Africa.

A witness, who asked to be anonymous, said her brother found the baby on the afternoon of March 26 when he went to use the toilet in Shabalala, near Hazyview.

"He heard the tiny voice of a crying baby coming from underground, so he called an elderly person who alerted the community.

"It was shocking and unbelievable. Other neighbours assisted and the concrete slab behind the toilet was gently removed. Luckily there were police officers from Masoyi police station nearby. They monitored the incident and the child was handed to one of them," he said.

The child's umbilical cord was still attached.

"The community, angered by what they saw, called for a meeting and the child's suspected mother, who was at her workplace at a nearby tavern, was also called. She first denied knowledge, but after Hazyview police arrived, she confessed to the crime. She said she did not want the baby," she said.

Hazyview police spokesperson Constable Anni Maphangane said the mother, Tracy Mdluli, 35, appeared in the Kabokweni Magistrate's Court on a charge of attempted murder and was still in custody.
