The parents of two-year-old triplets killed in a Doha mall fire say they will spend the third anniversary of their deaths reflecting on their short lives. Lillie, Jackson and Willsher Weekes died on May 28, 2012, in a blaze at the Villaggio Mall in Qatar's capital, Doha.
The third anniversary is a painful reminder to parents Jane and Martin Weekes that the people responsible are yet to serve any jail time and remain on the diplomatic circuit in Europe.
Sheikh Ali Bin Jassim Bin Al-Thani, a member of Qatar's Royal family and Qatar's Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter over the fire at the mall's nursery, which he owned with his wife, who was also convicted.
The couple remain in Brussels while their appeal is considered. The Weekes asked Prime Minister John Key to raise their distress with Qatar that Al-Thani and his wife had been able to delay court proceedings by continually failing to appear in court.
Key received an assurance from the Emir of Qatar that justice would be done.
In a statement, the Weekes said Al-Thani again refused to appear in the appeal court at Qatar this month. A verdict is likely to be released at the end of the month, they said.
"We are disappointed but not surprised that Mr Al-Thani is refusing to attend court. At least we know that our Prime Minister, John Key, has taken this matter seriously and we are sure he will continue to do so," they said.
