Discovered 41 years ago in 1973, 'Lucy the Australopithecus' has been celebrated with a Google Doodle. She lived in Ethiopia 3.2 million years ago. She belonged to the hominid from the Australopithecus afarensis species.
- Unlike many fossils that would have suffered damage, 40 per cent of Lucy's skeleton was found intact when dug up.
- Lucy walked upright
- Lucy died as a fully grown adult at a petite height of only 1.1m and weighed 29kg.
- The cause of her death is unknown
- Lucy still lives in Ethiopia close to where she was found, at the National Museum of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa. Only a plaster replica of her skeleton is available to be seen by the public.
