South Africa truck owner could be brought to book (photo)

The owner of the truck that ploughed into dozens of cars on the N12 in Alberton will be brought to book if it is found that the truck was faulty, said Transport Minister Dipuo Peters.

Four people were killed and dozens more injured after the truck rammed into 49 vehicles which were moving in steady traffic on the N12 east near Voortrekker Road. The driver of truck, who has since been arrested, claimed that the brakes had failed.

"I urge for the harshest possible punishment to be meted out against the offenders," Peters said in a statement. "The owner of the truck should be brought to book should it be absolutely ascertained that the truck was mechanically defective," she said.

Peters said that drivers often found themselves in difficult positions with their opinions on the safety of the vehicles not considered.

"Some [truck drivers] often find themselves in vulnerable situations where their opinion regarding the wellness of a truck is of no significance to the owners," she said.
