A strike by Gauteng taxi drivers turned ugly on Monday when highways were blockaded and passengers allegedly pulled out of vehicles, a report says.
The strike was organised by the United Taxi Association Front.
In photos shown on Twitter, taxis were shown blocking a part of the M1 and M2 freeways.The blockade resulted in the Johannesburg Metro Police Department closing the on-ramps, says The Star.
Commuters who had gathered at the Bree Street taxi rank, and had tried getting into the vehicles of motorists who were offerings rides, were allegedly forced out by strikers.
The Gauteng education department also said it would show mercy to matrics who were late for exams as a result of the strike, saying they will allow latecomers to write as well.
The taxi drivers were striking about permits and e-tolls.
Earlier, Eyewitness News reported that taxi drivers had marched to the transport MEC’s office where they were to hand over a memorandum of grievances.
