In 2014 our minds and ears were introduced to Cassper Nyovest. His song Doc Shebeleza was all we heard on the radio for a good couple of months and the hype it built made sure his debut album went gold soon after its release.
Cassper sat down with The Juice just after the release of his debut album to talk about its inspirations. He says the lead single is a tribute to Kwaito legend Doc Shebeleza and all he wanted to do was make a rap song people would be happy to get down to.
He explains the track is part of a debut album he feels reflects where he’s at and where he wants to be in the game. But he also believes the album is a self-reflection, starting with its title; Tsholofelo.
“The name of the album is quite special to me. It’s like a tribute,” he says. It’s named after my little sister.”.
“She gave me her last R100 when I was broke and was just a guy with a dream. That was like 5 years ago and I know she went to school with no lunch because of it,” he reveals. “So when I got big I thought I’d name my album after her to say thank you. Now she doesn’t have to struggle anymore,” he laughs.
