US-based Nigerian musician sentenced for $3.5m tax refunds fraud

Last Thursday, Olufunsho Adeshina, 29-year-old guitarist, was sentenced to 41 months in a federal prison and must pay $753,063 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service for trying to steal more than $3m in fake tax refunds. Investigators stated Adeshina collected nearly $800k from more than 50 refunds by filing false tax returns under other people’s names. He ended up collecting roughly $750k. The IRS said he tried to file for more than $3.5m in refunds but many didn’t go through.

Three local banks helped investigators in arrest after noticing suspicious behavior. He has been in federal custody since April, 2014 after being arrested at Atlanta-Hartsfield Airport returning to the US from Nigeria.
