85-year old hacks scavenger to death in Lagos

An 85-year old man, known as Mohammed Bello, has been jailed for the next 33 days for allegedly hacking a man to death.

The accused, 85, was arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates, Magistrate K.A. Ariyo on Friday for murder charges.According to NAN, the Prosecutor, Cpl. Hafsat Ajibode said the offence was committed on Jan. 17 at about 11.30 a.m. at Ogudu Grammar School.

In her explanation, she said a fight had ensued between the deceased (Ismaila Ibrahim), a scavenger, and another man over scavenging in a school environment.

Bello, who was at the scene at that time, stepped in to settle the fight, an action that did not go down well with Ibrahim, who felt Bello’s involvement had given the other man an upper hand in the fight.

She said,

“The deceased started abusing Bello, who got angry and picked up a plank with which he hit the deceased on the head … this led to his death.”

The case has been adjourned till Feb. 28.
